Goddess school

4 months ago 30th Aug 13:15

Nepal's nine-year-old living Goddess has been told she has to go to school.

Preeti Shakya, named as the living Godess Kumari at the age of three, stays in a palace in the country's capital, Kathmandu. She is not allowed to touch the ground, and only leaves the palace to be carried around the capital in a carriage on festival days.

However, Nepal has recently become a secular republic, and the country's left-wing government has ruled that she is allowed to go to school, saying keeping her in the palace is a violation of her rights.

Those who look after Kumari said they took orders from the heavens, not the Supreme Court. They argue Preeti has access to education from a private teacher who visits her every day.
