Locals in a small American town have been left puzzled by cuts of meat which have been left in a tree.

Villagers of Framingham, Boston, are bewildered as to why fresh cuts - believed to be beef - have been appearing on Town Centre Common for the past five weeks.

Lieutenant Paul Shastany, who is now heading an investigation into the perplexing meat mystery, said: "It's our mission to get to the bottom of why these pieces of meat are being left. Why? Who? And what is it? What kind of meat?"

The pieces left include a 5lb shoulder cut, a scrap cut covered in gristle, a 10-pound roast and a slice of liver.

Samples of the meat have been sent off for testing to ensure they are not poisoned.

Some residents believe the meat is being presented as a gift to local wildlife, while others suspect it to be venison which had been hunted in the area.
