Peruvian doctors have removed a number of metal objects from the stomach of a man.

Luis Zarate, 38, was taken to hospital in the regional of Trujillo with a swollen stomach. Upon inspection he was found to have metal objects including nails, a watch clasp, and a knife in his stomach - all of which he had eaten.

Dr. Julio Acevedo who operated on Zarate said: "There were 17 strange objects found at the level of his stomach and colon. The objects had caused the stomach to expand."

X-rays of Zarate showed his skeleton is interlaced with objects including bolts, barbed wire, and pens.

Doctors have confirmed Zarate is mentally ill, but say it still remains unclear why he has tried to ingest so much metal.
