The carrot was hailed Britain's Best Loved Vegetable.
The orange root veg, favourite of Bugs Bunny, scooped the most votes closely followed by the starchy dinner-time staple - the potato.
Broccoli - known for its high vitamin C content and also thought to contain a chemical that can boost DNA repair in cells to stop them becoming cancerous - came third in the poll.
Sweetcorn, synonymous with the Green Giant brand, followed and Parsnips - the classic Sunday roast accompaniment - came fifth.
John Sewell from internet market research firm www.onepoll.com, which surveyed 3,000 UK food lovers, said: ''Carrots are delicious both cooked and eaten raw and make a great healthy snack.
''The vegetable is tasty in baking too - carrot cake has become an increasing popular tea-time treat over the past few decades.
''There is also the urban myth that carrots can even help you see in the dark, due to their high Vitamin A properties which can help restore vision.''
Sixth in the top veg line-up was the humble pea - often mashed in the North of England to accompany fish and chips or meat pies.
Onions were in seventh place, followed by cauliflower in eighth.
The trendy summer veg asparagus came next in the poll and garlic, characterised by its strong smell and flavour, completed the top ten.
''With Brits being increasingly more health conscious these days, people want to cook with fresh ingredients and in particular vegetables.
''It's good to see asparagus in the top ten - celebrity chefs are really promoting seasonal veg and as a result are sparking a trend for more experimental cooking in homes nationwide.''
