Meryl Streep belting out ABBA's 'Super Trouper' wearing a spandex catsuit is not the sight you would ordinarily associate with a trip to the cinema, but is one which seems to be proving hugely successful already.
'Mamma Mia!' sees actors traditionally associated with 'serious' roles - namely Meryl, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth - donning tight outfits to sing some of the Swedish band's greatest hits, a prospect which terrified Colin.
"Blind terror is a very bonding commodity," he laughs. "I showed up on the first day of pre-record absolutely terrified! Then I turned round to be introduced to Pierce and I was staring into a vortex of fear, and it was the same with Stellan, and I suddenly realised we weren't alone."
Aside from the spectacle of seeing the stars singing, viewers can also enjoy a well-told story of Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried, who is attempting to find out which of her mother's (Meryl) three lovers (Colin, Pierce and Stellan Skarsgard) is her father ahead of her wedding to Sky (Dominic Cooper).
The movie is adapted from the hit musical of the same name, and had the full backing of former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus - who also ensured they were on set throughout filming.
Meryl said: "Benny and Bjorn were there all the time - whenever we were filming. They were very generous letting us make the songs are own.
"As long as we were exact on the words and the timing and didn't lose the beat - they let us express it how we wanted to express it. I didn't want to disappoint them, I didn't want to let them down."
