When Dirty Harry was released Callahan became the first of a new kind of movie cop: a borderline vigilante who doesn't hesitate when crossing professional and ethical boundaries in pursuit of his own vision of justice, an idea that would be copied over and over in the years to come.
Despite his somewhat unorthodox and often violent methods of apprehending criminals is devoted to protecting and avenging the victims of violent crime.
Callahan has little use for many of the official rules of police conduct, dismissing them as "red tape" and loathes the court system that lets the criminals get away with their crimes he is only interested in doing his job.. protecting the general public against violent offenders and seeking justice for those who have suffered at their hands.
Leon, played by French actor jean Reno, is a professional assassin who lives a shady and dangerous life in New York City's Little Italy.
Most of his work comes from a mafioso named Tony (Danny Aiello), who operates from the "Supreme Macaroni Company" retail store. Leon spends his idle time engaging in calisthenics, nurturing a houseplant that early on he describes as his "best friend".
After the brutal murder of the dysfunctional family that live next door, that leaves only 13 year old Matilda alive, he reluctantly agrees to take care of her.
However while he 'protects' her he is teaching her to become a killer to exact revenge on the man who murdered her family. However in the extended version of the film there is some suggestion that the pair develop more than a father daughter relationship.
Even in his 'heroic suicide' Leon sill remains a remorseless murderer even if he did die to protect a child.
The man with no name is the main character in Sergio Leone's trilogy A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and is the second appearance for Clint Eastwood.
The man with no name is a man with a dark past, no future, and he knows how to kill and how to move on after killing. He’s not kind, but he is righteous. He’s a killer and he knows it, but he will only kill other killers.
He has no name because he has no future, but he has a true code of honour. Not good, not bad, but honourable: the perfect anti-hero.
Tyler Durden is the most recent anti hero to make the list as he appeared in 1999 cult movie Fight Club, played by Brad Pitt.
And while Durden isn't a ruthless killer or a defender of the public he is a modern anti-hero in the sense that he is anti-capitalism, anti-credit card, he’s against being made into a zombie and doesn't follow the crowd.
Tyler Durden is a strong, free thinking and independent individual who fights against wrongs that many feel powerless to stop or change, however he has no moral reason behind why he fights he does it because he can and wants to.
The Dark Knight is released 24th July

Tyler Durden is a great character... even if he is a little misguided!
