The cream of Britain’s music and sporting talent unite in celebration.
Some of Britain’s top music stars including Will Young, The Feeling and James Morrison, today joined the world’s biggest sporting heroes to mark the start of London's tenure as the official host city of the 2012 Summer Games.
As Boris Johnson was handed the Olympic flag in front of a worldwide audience of 1.6 billion at the closing ceremony in Beijing, 40,000 people gathered in The Mall for the Visa London 2012 Party that kick-started a day of celebration and marks the official countdown to the London 2012 Games. Other music acts that performed at the free event in the shadow of Buckingham Palace included classical superstars Il Divo, the radiant Katherine Jenkins, and pop bands McFly and Scouting for Girls.
More than 30 giant screens were set up all over the country to allow people to see the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and the moment that London’s term as the official host city begins. The LIVE Olympic handover screenings took place in Trafalgar Square, Canary Wharf, Shoreditch Park, O2 Arena, Notting Hill and Greenwich Wharf, and were also seen across Cardiff, Belfast, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester.
