Yahoo! Eurosport poll finds Britain’s sporting efforts leave the nation with mixed feelings
London, 13 August, 2008: Research from Yahoo! Eurosport, the essential starting point for all sports fans, has shown that that just over half of sports enthusiasts (54%)* have felt drained by Britain’s efforts over the summer months. With the football season about to start, Britain’s rollercoaster love affair with sport is set to continue.
You’d think Lewis Hamilton’s heroics at Silverstone, Laura Robson’s triumph at Wimbledon and Padraig Harrington’s victory at The Open, would be enough to lift the mood following the failure of the Home Nations to qualify for Euro 2008. But the mixed bag of sporting successes has left Britain divided this summer.
Over 1,400 sports fans voted in the Yahoo! Eurosport poll and were split on the impact this year’s sporting summer has had on them. The mixed results very much support the Jekyll and Hyde summer we’ve experienced.
One minute Andy Murray has made the comeback of his lifetime against Richard Gasquet at Wimbledon, the next he is surrendering meekly to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Despite a bright start to the summer, England’s cricket team has lost its second Test series against South Africa and has prompted Michael Vaughan’s resignation as captain.
“Sport plays such an important part in our lives and affects us in many different ways. When our team does well, it visibly lifts our spirits, but when we lose, it can certainly make us feel weary,” says Erik Hartberg, Product Manager, Yahoo! Eurosport.
“It hasn’t all been doom and gloom though and the new football season is sure to provide plenty of excitement over the next nine months. Fans should keep an eye on Yahoo! Eurosport, at http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/, to ensure they stay up to date on the latest action,” Erik continues.
