Paul Sculthorpe is starting to run out of options.
Wildcats do not have the room in their salary cap to sign Sculthorpe.
The 30-year-old has been told he will not be offered a new deal by St Helens and Wildcats boss John Kear had expressed an interest in signing him.
Sculthorpe is out of contract at the end of the season and Howes added the player could yet still join Salford.
Wakefield coach Kear had been hoping that the lure of playing alongside brother Danny would have persuaded Sculthorpe to move to Belle Vue but finances have dictated otherwise.
Sculthorpe, the only man ever to win back-to-back Man of Steel awards, joined Saints from Warrington 10 years ago and led them to three Grand Finals and two Challenge Cup victories.
But in recent years the former Great Britain captain has suffered a string of injuries, including a knee reconstruction, and he has only managed 12 games this season.
